First Hyundai fuel cell vehicles arrive in the UK
Public can order hydrogen powered cars
The first Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell customer vehicles have arrived in the UK – heralding a new environmentally friendly choice for motorists.
Hyundai says that UK drivers can now contact it to order one of the ground-breaking, zero emission vehicles, with delivery due early next year.
It is the first time that a hydrogen fuelled car has been available for consumer purchase in the UK.
With no harmful tailpipe emissions, the ix35 Fuel Cell can travel more than 350 miles in real-world driving conditions before refueling – a process the manufacturer says takes only three minutes. The vehicle can reach 62 mph in 12.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 100 mph.
The pioneering vehicles are currently only in use among organisations such as Transport for London, Air Products and Johnson Matthey.
“ Making the first UK customer deliveries of hydrogen-powered cars is a huge landmark for the industry. Hyundai is the first company in the world to start series-production of a fuel cell vehicle and is committed to rolling-out this technology in line with government plans to grow the refuelling infrastructure, ” said Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK.
T he ix35 Fuel Cell has undergone extensive safety testing including multiple crash test procedures and vehicle strength assessments. In addition the car is equipped with a number of safety features including intelligent sensors to detect anomalies and safety valves to shut off the hydrogen in the event of a collision.
