Ford Fiesta ST is ‘TopGear Magazine Car of the Year 2013’
Ultimate accolade for the ‘hot hatch’
The Ford Fiesta is no stranger to awards and now the Fiesta ST has earned the ultimate accolade the ‘TopGear Magazine Car of the Year 2013’. It was, according to the magazine, a unanimous choice ‘a car that invigorates, excites and rekindles some of the love you thought you’d lost for the simple stuff. A car that puts a smile on your face each and every day. It’s the most enjoyable car of 2013.’
TopGear Magazine said “the Fiesta ST does all of the things a hot hatch must do… the difference with the Ford is that it does them for £16,995. Often this would mean it lacks something the others have. But no, it has 180 horsepower. It looks cracking. The chassis is as lovingly engineered as a McLaren’s. It grips and goes better than the others and as far as we can see there is no catch. The dealers could charge a few grand more, and it’d still feel like a good deal. But they don’t, and good on them. Power to the People? It’s borderline socialist.” In fact the victory of the Fiesta is really quite outstanding as it was rivalling for the top spot with competition such as the £866,000 McLaren P1 supercar.
Anthony Ireson, Ford of Britain marketing director, said “the Fiesta ST seems to impress everybody who gets behind the wheel, and the TopGear magazine judges are no exception. This is a major accolade for the Fiesta ST and for Ford, and we are delighted to see the car recognised as such an enjoyable and value-for-money proposition.”
Orders poured in when the Ford Fiesta ST went on sale in March and Ford received double the expected number of orders for the award winning car in its first six months of sales. Three thousand orders were been placed in the first month which was a sales rate well ahead of the projected five thousand per year target. The car is powered by a 180PS, 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine it is capable of 0-62mph in 6.9 sec and has a top speed of 139mph. The Fiesta ST offers performance-tuned steering, suspension, brakes and enhanced Torque Vectoring Control, as well as Ford MyKey, SYNC with Emergency Assistance and Recaro sports seats and it is priced from just £16,995 on the road.
TopGear’s awards are the latest in a long line of commendations for the Fiesta ST, including Auto Express Best Hot Hatch and Scottish Car of the Year Best Hot Hatch. The many prizes have been more than matched by sales orders, with production targets increased by 15 per cent to meet demand from buyers Europe-wide.
