Forecourt Update: Honda Civic Type R
What Is it?
The Civic Type R is the high performance version of Honda's small family class hatchback. It rivals the Ford Focus ST and VW Golf R.
Honda claims it is “the most extreme and high performing Type R in the 22 year history of the red H badge”, which signals “the start of a new performance era for the brand”.
What Are The Engine Options?
The Civic Type R is propelled by a 2-litre i-VTEC 280PS petrol engine. This turbocharged unit red lines at 7,000 rpm and is teamed with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This type of transmission – rather than automatic – has been chosen to “maximise driving enjoyment”.
Honda claims that its engine has “unmatched performance against any previous Type R”.
What Are The Trim Options?
The 280PS engine is only available with the Type R trim. Details of the internal specification are sketchy, but it incorporates a “+R” button next to the steering wheel. This allows the driver to heighten engine responsiveness and sharpening the feel of the steering.
Honda claims that “In default standard mode, the Civic Type R is exceptionally agile - an everyday sports car with enjoyable and fluid acceleration.” However, “The +R button brings out a more dynamic and athletic car”. The company concludes that its hot-hatch is “ideal for the track and will be appreciated by the genuine sports driving enthusiast”.
Anything Else I Need To Know?
The Civic Type R has adaptive dampers. These adjust the stiffness of the suspension – within a “split second” based on the driving conditions. Their purpose is to “provide a comfortable ride during cruising” yet be ”firm and agile for high-performance handling”.
How Much Is It?
The Civic Type R will be launched early 2015. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but a starting point of about £30,000 is likely. Drivers can pre-order immediately via a £3,000 deposit.
