Forecourt Update: Lexus GS F Saloon
Lexus GS F At North American International Auto Show
What Is it?
The Lexus GS F Saloon is the high performance version of the manufacturer's mid-size executive cruiser. Rivals include the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG S and Jaguar XFR-S. It will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, on January 13th 2015. Rumours suggest it will be available in the United Kingdom late 2015.
Lexus says it “combines a refined, 4-door design, with the speed and agility of a premium sports car”, and emphasis that it is the latest in a series of high performance “F” models.
What Are The Engine Options?
A 5.0-litre, naturally aspirated, V8 provides power. It produces 467bhp at 7,100rpm and 527Nm of torque between 4,800 and 5,600rpm. Performance data has not been confirmed, but the GS F probably hits 62mph in about 4.5 seconds and continues to 170mph.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via 8-speed transmission. This enables the driver to cruise in full-auto mode or select gears manually via paddles behind the steering wheel.
What Are The Trim Options?
GS F is the trim. The full specification has not been confirmed but includes a Torque Vectoring Differential. Its purpose is to optimise the vehicle's handling by varying which wheel – or wheels - the engine sends power too. The system has 3 modes:
- Standard (for “a balance of agility and firmness”)
- Slalom (for “nimble steering response and agility”)
- Track (for “stability in high-speed circuit driving”).
Anything Else I Need To Know?
The Lexus GS F has sportier suspension than its siblings to optimise the “handling capabilities and ride quality”. The manufacturer promises “stable, smooth, performance on the open road and rewarding handling when tackling challenging routes” (or circuits).
How Much Is It?
The Lexus GS F is likely to cost £75,000 to £80,000 (unconfirmed).
