Forecourt Update: Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake
What Is it?
The Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake is the estate version of the CLA, a medium-size 4-door coupé. Its manufacturer claims it has been designed for “active customers who are looking outside of the mainstream for a car that impresses with a high utility value".
In other words, it is for those that need a large boot but want to sidestep traditional looking estates that can be perceived as boxy and unfashionable. So, the CLA Shooting Brake - like the larger CLS Shooting Brake - has a big cargo capacity and coupé-like styling.
Mercedes-Benz claims its styling incorporates a “lower overall height”, the “sweep of the high belt line” and the “elongated coupé-style roof”. The roof ensures it has more headroom than the CLA Coupé. Cargo capacity is 495-litres rising to 1,354-litres when the rear seats are folded flat. Such figures are comparable to the current Ford Focus Estate.
What Are The Engine Options?
The CLA Shooting Brake is available with two diesel and three petrol engines:
- CLA 200 CDI: 2.143cc, 136hp, 300Nm of torque
- CLA 220 CDI: 2.143cc, 177hp, 350Nm of torque
- CLA 180: 1.595cc, 122hp, 200Nm of torque
- CLA 200: 1.595cc, 156hp, 250Nm of torque
- CLA 250: 1,991cc, 211hp, 350Nm of torque (also available with 4-wheel-drive).
What Are The Trim Options?
The Urban equipment line incorporates a diamond radiator grille with high-gloss black pins, 18-inch alloy wheels and a two-pipe chromed exhaust. The interior benefits from sports seats that have contrasting stitching, plus a multifunction leather steering wheel.
The AMG Line, in contrast, has more aggressive styling that includes more muscular bumpers. These complement the lowered suspension that sharpens the handling. Furthermore, the interior has a flat bottomed steering wheel and leather gear stick.
Finally, the OrangeArt Edition has orange flashes on its body and inside the cabin. These complement black wheels that have orange rims, plus the orange headlight surrounds.
How Much Is It?
Prices are yet to be confirmed, but expect about £1,000 more than for a comparable CLA Coupé. This suggests a starting point of £25,800.
Anything Else I Need To Know?
The CLA Shooting Brake can be ordered in January 2015 with deliveries from March 2015.
