Forecourt Update: Mercedes-Maybach S 600
Everything you need to know about the new luxury saloon from Mercedes
What Is It?
The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 is a forthcoming luxury saloon to compete with the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur. It is also the concoction of two brands.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is its manufacturer's long established, top of the range, saloon that sells in large numbers. The company claims it is “the best car in the world”.
Mercedes-Benz also owns the Maybach badge that it revived – as a separate brand – a few years ago. Its purpose was to establish a more prestigious badge within the manufacturer's range. Why? Because in addition to expensive vehicles, the Mercedes badge is associated with affordable cars such as the A-Class. For some, that devalues it.
So, the Maybach badge only appeared on expensive limousines such as the 57 and the 62. These have been withdrawn following poor sales which – for a time – killed the badge.
The manufacturer has now brought it back to life and linked it more closely to Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Maybach – the manufacture says - is a “sub-brand” that delivers “vehicles in an even more exclusive form”. It is not a new, high-end, S-Class trim.
Mercedes says it represents the “benchmark for exclusivity” and offers “extensive scope for individualisation”. The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 is also more spacious than its siblings.
What is under the bonnet?
The Mercedes-Maybach S 600 has not been fully revealed so we have to make a few assumptions. Power – based on its “S 600” badge - is likely to come from its sibling's 6-litre V12, 530PS, petrol engine that is teamed with 7-speed, auto, transmission. This power plant is likely to propel it to 62mph in about 5 seconds and average about 25mpg.
What Are The Trim levels?
Just the one, the S 600. It is likely to be supremely equipped and highly customisable.
How Much Is It?
The Mercedes-S-Class – in standard form - costs from £62,905 to £183,065. The S 600 Maybach version is likely to cost toward the high end of these figures, or slightly beyond.
