Forecourt Update: New Ford Mustang for 2015
New Ford Mustang Ready For Launch
What Is it?
The 2015 Ford Mustang is the first version of the muscle car available in factory-fit right-hand drive form for the UK. Body styles are Fastback (coupé) and Convertible.
The Mustang has been in continuous production – albeit over several generations – for 50 years. It has legendary status thanks to its speedy performance, styling and association with the film industry. It has a notable role next to Steve McQueen in Bullitt, for example.
What Are The Engine Options?
A 5.0-litre V8, 418PS, petrol engine provides population (524Nm of torque). It can be teamed to 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The auto incorporates paddles behind the steering wheel that enable the motorist to change gear manually.
Compared to its predecessor this power plant has larger intake valves, larger exhaust valves, revised intake camshafts, revised exhaust camshafts and stiffer valve springs.
A 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo is the alternative. Its purpose is to “meet the needs of drivers looking for outstanding performance and fuel efficiency” and it has been created for the Mustang. It has 314PS, 434Nm of torque, and can be bolted to a manual or auto gearbox.
What Are The Trim Options?
Trim levels have not been confirmed but the list is likely to be short. Equipment includes the Selectable Drive Mode system that enables the motorist to change the response of the steering, engine, transmission and electronic stability control to suit the conditions.
The Ford Mustang also has SYNC 2 which is the manufacturer's latest infotainment system. It incorporates an 8-inch touch screen and can be controlled by voice. Simply speak to operate the stereo, sat-nav, climate control and compatible mobile phones.
Anything Else I Need To Know?
The Mustang has superior suspension than its predecessor. At the front, a new perimeter subframe helps stiffen the structure and reduce mass. Ford claims it provides “a strong foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride”.
At the rear the geometry, springs, dampers and bushings have been modified and “tuned” for high-performance motoring. Ford claims the suspension is “suited to European roads”.
How Much Is It?
UK Mustang prices have not been confirmed, but expect a lot of power for the money.
