Defining the best car for dog owners is a favoured pass time in the canine community. It is more important than speculating why Lassie now shuns the press, or why Sputnik 2's four-legged pilot failed to return to earth.Vehicles come in as many shapes and sizes as our stick chasing friends. However, traditional estate cars offer the most practicality - particularly for owners of bigger dogs. This is because low loading platforms make access easy. This is particularly beneficial for elderly or injured animals. Estate car capacity also enables pets to travel with their beds, blankets, and favourite toys. So, which enterprising estates make the grade? The Volvo V70 is a front runner as the boot is large enough for big dogs to stretch out without laying the seats flat. The rear window is also virtually straight which maximises headroom for man's best friend. Prices start at £24,245 and various accessories are available which make the V70 even more dog friendly. These include luggage compartment dividers and protective flooring in case Fido is a nervous passenger. The Ford Mondeo Estate is another contender as it shares many of the V70's strengths. It is available from a more reasonable £20,000, but this remains a considerably sum if Mr Dog intends to reduce the vehicle to a pile of masticated scrap. Motorists on a budget may therefore prefer a used Vauxhall Omega Estate. This once capable executive plaything can now be purchased seven years old for only £3,000.
