Honda Hybrid Vehicle Sales
Honda has sold more than 800,000 hybrid vehicles since the first generation 'Insight' hit the roads in November 1999.
Did you know... Honda has sold more than 800,000 hybrid vehicles since the first generation 'Insight' hit the roads in November 1999? Yes, I have counted them. The original Insight – despite looking like something from Mars - had the best fuel economy of any petrol-powered vehicle of the period. Today, Honda sells seven hybrid vehicles in fifty countries. Worldwide sales for 2011 were, in fact, around 200,000 units - a 30% increase compared to the previous year. In the UK, Honda has sold more than 22,000 hybrids since the original Insight first plugged into the British mindset. But, should you buy hybrid?Let us consider the facts. The current Honda Insight averages up to 64.2mpg, and its carbon emissions are as low as 101g/km. Fair enough, but the similar-sized Ford Focus Hatchback – in its most fuel efficient diesel guise – averages 3.1mpg more and has virtually identical emissions. Furthermore, the Honda CR-Z Hybrid averages 56.5mpg and it coughs-up carbon at a rate of 117g/km. As such, this two-door coupé is less fuel efficient, more polluting, and slower than some non-hybrid MINI Hatchbacks. Despite Honda's noteworthy hybrid sales, conventionally powered cars clearly have plenty to offer.
