What again? The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been named 'Best Luxury Car' by Auto Express for the sixth consecutive year. Okay Mercedes, give the other fellows a fighting chance. Using the 'world's cleanest diesel technology as standard', this monstrous machine has eclipsed rivals such as the Jaguar XJ and the BMW 7 Series. That takes some doing.Auto Express Acting Editor, Graham Hope, said: “The Mercedes still reigns supreme. What sets it apart is the astonishingly comfortable ride, it is the most relaxing saloon in the business. Nothing can match the S-Class’s imperious refinement and the array of gadgets help make this car one of the safest and most hi-tech models money can buy.” Fair enough. This striking beauty is an astonishing machine. The interior feels like a world of its own, as if protected from the perils of the modern world. Bullet-proof is the best way to describe it. Still, just as well the S-Class feels special. Prices for this status symbol range from £60,005 to a wallet-wrecking £163,630. Could buy a small house for that. The latter price is arguably too much, but perhaps the S-Class's trophy cabinet is enough justification. Marketing Director of Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars, David George, collected the award and commented: “Six wins in a row is fantastic. It really demonstrates that the S-Class is the benchmark in its sector on every level - and as well as the Auto Express judges voting for our luxury saloon, S-Class remains a firm favourite among our customers.” Wonder which luxury saloon will claim the title next year.
