Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
The charm of 1950’s supercars with the speed of 2009, truly impressive which ever way you look at it
Imagine we could bring back all those supercars we love from the past, pause for a minute, and imagine which one you would have, imagine now you could have them without the rust, reliability issues, and maybe with an up rated engine and improved cockpit. Mercedes have realised this dream of many a car fan in the form of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
Taking major inspiration from the unmistakably beautiful Mercedes-Benz 300SL from 1954 a year in which we saw Marilyn Monroe marry Joe DiMaggio, Roger Bannister ran the 4minute mile, West-Germany win the world cup and Vera Lynn warbled her first hit since the 30’s.
Much like Vera Lynn with the release of an album of tracks which shapes a certain part of our lives, the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL epitomised another part of our motoring culture, one which is viewed upon as intrinsic in shaping future sports cars. Much like the story of Vera Lynn, being away from the public for so long and returning with a bang, the original shaped Mercedes-Benz 300SL is to be re entered into the Frankfurt motorshow under the guise of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG which could go on the market at around the £140,000 price mark to compete with the McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari 458 Italia, a snippet in comparison to the £550,000 asking price for the original 1954 model.
For the price of a 3 bed house in Nottingham, the owner of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will get a huge amount in return. Not only is this one of the most beautiful cars on earth, with it’s long nose, running down to the big Mercedes-Benz badge sat on a single chrome strip across the air intake. Go to open the door, and avoid your chin as the gullwing doors open up allowing you to revel in the boy-hood fantasy of such an impractical door design.
Under the long, long snout is expected to be a 571bhp 6.2-litre V8 from the C63 AMG creating 479lb of torque through the seven-speed clutch box. A top speed of 197mph is to be expected, with a 0-62 in 3.8 grin bearing seconds.
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG arrives next year followed by a roadster, super aggressive Black Series edition, and even an all electric version for Boris and his mate David to fly around in expected in 2012.
A car which will seriously heat up the competition and a different approach to the Supercar market. If you have a big bank balance, and an equally big taste for supercars an incredibly difficult choice may have to be made.
