Mercedes have finally revealed pictures of their upcoming SLS AMG Roadster, and the trademark gull wing doors are no more. Although the pictures above show a disguised version, the finished model will look pretty much the same.

All the major changes have happened underneath the bodywork with thicker side skirts to make the sides more robust since the loss of the gull wing doors, new cross member to support the dash board, additional support around the window frames, transmission tunnel and rear axle, all this to improve the strength of the car. Even with all this added support the SLS roadster only weighs 2kg heavier than the coupe.

The new soft-top roof can be opened and closed while driving at speeds of up to 31mph, and happens in just 11 seconds, not bad for a 197mph monster.

The complete and finished version of the SLS Roadster will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 13th September.

One of the most pointless and crass headlines of all time - how could a convertible have gull wing doors?

What a shame we have 70mph limits in England!!!
