Great news. MG Motor UK sold 107 vehicles in January 2012; the best first month performance since the company was launched in 2009. Okay, not huge figures compared to some rivals – but progress is progress. The MG6 also recently scooped the What Car? 2012 Security Award, which was the first major honour for the car. The magazine's judging criteria was to find the manufacturer that demonstrated the greatest effort to improve security - either through a particular innovation or a sheer determination to design-out crime. Perhaps January's pleasing sales figures are – in part – thanks to the security award. The MG6 is available as a practical five-door hatchback and a sleek saloon called the 'Magnette'. This branding has been revived from cars of the past. Every model is powered by a 1.8-litre 158bhp petrol engine, but it would be nice to have a few choices. An efficient diesel engine would be particularly welcome, as would a high-performance version. The latter would also add a touch of glamour. Furthermore, the MG6's handling is more fun-focussed than some rivals, but it needs work to 'trump' the best in class. I like this car though, and now we know it is hard to pinch. Fingers crossed for lots of sales this February.
