The Motability Car Scheme makes it easy for disabled motorists to source family cars – and there are now new offers for winter 2011. The scheme offers two options, the hire purchase agreement or the far more popular three-year contract hire. Let us focus on the latter. Eligible participants receive either the higher rate mobility component of the disability living allowance, or the war pensioners' mobility supplement. The car is paid for using all or part of the benefit, but some also require an advance payment. This varies considerably.Noteworthy contract hire bargains - for those claiming the higher rate mobility component - include the capable Ford Mondeo. This, depending on specification, is available for the total weekly value of the benefit – plus advance payments ranging from £795 to £1,895. This workhorse is an excellent choice as it is beautifully constructed, extremely easy to drive, spacious, and has numerous gadgets. The Mondeo is easily one of the best in class. Alternatively, motorists who love multi-purpose vehicles may prefer the family-friendly Vauxhall Zafira. This motorway mile-muncher is available, in 1.6-litre Design trim, for the total weekly benefit plus a pint-sized £149 advance payment. It is also listed in 1.7 TD Design guise for the higher up-front payment of £699. Reasonable sums for a practical family taxi with seven seats, composed handling, a comfortable ride, and pleasing looks. Those in receipt of the war pensioners' supplement may fall for the charms of the quirky Nissan Qashqai. This 'crossover' vehicle is listed in the Motability database from £54.59 per-week, with no advance payment whatsoever. This robustly constructed run-around has a spacious cabin, decent boot, excellent visibility, and sensible running costs. Happy days.
