New BMW X1 delivers at all levels

The stylish new BMW X1 ticks all the right boxes when it comes to style, performance, practicality and economy.

The stylish new BMW X1 ticks all the right boxes when it comes to style, performance, practicality and economy. It goes on sale in the UK on 24 October, 2009 with the sDrive18d and xDrive18d variants following in December.

The dominance of diesel engines in other BMW SUV’s, led BMW UK to decide only to offer diesel in the UK. But the diesel engines offer a cracking package of performance and value, with the sDrive 18d SE manual delivering a top speed of 124 mph, 0-62mph in under 10 seconds and 54.3mpg on the combined cycle. To put this in context, that’s more miles for your money than a Ford Fiesta 1.2.

The BMW sDrive18d and the xDrive18d feature four-cylinder powerplants with an all-aluminium crankcase and a single turbocharger . Common-rail diesel technology ensures optimum combustion. The X1 xDrive18d SE posts figures of 10.1 seconds and a 121mph top speed. Both models are exceptionally fuel efficient, capable of 54.3mpg and 49.6mpg on the combined cycle respectively. The engine is EU5 rated and records 136g/km and 150g/km CO2 emissions.

Offering a higher outright performance, the BMW sDrive20d SE and xDrive20d SE are also offered. These are essentially tuned versions of the same engine, resulting in improved performance figures with zero to 62mph attained in 8.1 seconds (8.4 for the xDrive20d) and a top speed of 127mph.

xDrive23d have a six-speed Sport automatic gearbox with gear change paddles located a finger tip away from the steering wheel for sporty changes, 4 wheel drive and higher performance.

The BMW X1 also has the full suite of EfficientDynmamics technologies including Brake Energy Regeneration, optimised aerodynamics, optimum shift indicator and on-demand use of ancillary units to name a few.

The profile of the car is sporty but not too sporty, and has interior space that sees five adults seated comfortably along with their luggage.

As ugly as ever! Why did they not take the opportunity to reduce the bonnet length to give it a better overall balance?

Looks good, just what I'm looking for. Where/when can I get full details. Better be quick because the Audi Q5 is my option and that's available now.

Very good and stylish,i think it is much better than the X6 when it comes to shape.
