New Hyundai i20 Turbo Edition Revealed
Hyundai strengthens its supermini by launching a new, turbocharged, Special Edition bristling with extra features.
What is it?
The Hyundai i20 Turbo Edition is a supermini class vehicle that “meets the growing trend for small capacity, turbo petrol, engines”, the manufacture said. This Special Edition is based on the SE – a mid-spec trim – and has a model specific engine plus exterior/interior extras which help it stand out from lesser trims.
Engine, fuel consumption and emissions
Power comes via its 1.0-litre, 100PS, turbocharged petrol engine that produces 171Nm of torque at 1,500rpm. This volume of torque at such low engine revolutions “provides a perfect combination of dynamism and efficiency”, the manufacture said. The engine also propels motorists to 62mph in 10.7 seconds and top speed is 116mph.
On this basis, the car has a pleasing turn of speed considering its class and price. The i20 Turbo costs from £12,975 on the road, after all. But equally important for a supermini – at least for a meaningful percentage of motorists – is that the running costs are kept in check via its modest fuel consumption and carbon emissions
The 1.0-litre, turbocharged, petrol engine averages 62.8mpg, the manufacturer suggested. This rises to 72.4mpg on the extra-urban cycle, then falls to 49.6mpg in town where vehicles tend to be least efficient. Low consumption means low emissions, so this power plant emits carbon through its exhaust pipe at the rate of 104g/km.
The carbon emissions of a modern vehicle define the cost of its Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax). Bands run from A to M and the i20- Turbo – that sends power to the front wheels only through 5-speed manual transmission – sits in Band B. The first year cost is, therefore, £0 rising to £20 for following years (at current rates).
The Turbo is a 5-door hatchback that looks modern, sophisticated and its c-pillars are coloured to create a “floating roof” effect. It also has 16” alloy wheels to elevate it above the SE; on which it is based. Specify either: Polar White, Aqua Sparkling, Sleek Silver, Stardust Grey, Phantom Black or Red Passion exterior paint.
The Hyundai i20 Turbo Edition inherits a pleasing specification from the SE. Highlights include: Bluetooth, cruise control with speed limiter and a leather steering wheel that incorporates audio/phone controls. The Turbo, however, also has: touchscreen satellite navigation, a reversing camera plus automatic headlights.
The Hyundai i20 Turbo Edition is backed by a 5 year, unlimited mileage, warranty plus a 12 year, anti-perforation, warranty. These can be transferred to subsequent owners should the vehicle be sold.
