MG has cut the insurance rating on the new MG6 by electronically limiting the top speed of the car. By capping the top speed of the new MG6 to 120mph the official insurance rating has been reduced by several groups. The basic MG6 1.8T S now sits in insurance group 13 and the higher spec MG6 SE and TSE are a group higher at 14 even though the MG6 has a 1.8 litre turbo charged petrol engine producing 160hp. A spokesman for MG said “we’ve let the cat out of the bag with this one, we have a close working relationship with Thatcham (the body that assesses new car insurance groups) and this led us to the discovery. We polled prospective owners before we did it and most were initially reluctant to have the top speed of their car limited, but when we pointed out they could save on their insurance, 99% said they’d accept the limiter.” When you compare a 137mpg Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSi 160 is in insurance group 30 which is twice that of the new MG6 perhaps it will be just a matter of time before other car maker’s start restricting the top speed of their cars in order to reduce insurance ratings and cut the price of premiums.
