Kia Soul overview

Kia produces a wide range of sports-utility and sports-utility style vehicles backed by a 7 year, 100,000 mile, warranty. Consider the All-New Soul, for example. The manufacturer said that this compact hatchback – that measures 4,140mm long, 1,800mm wide and has a 354-litre boot – is “stylish” and “designed to be different”.

Engine options include the: 1.6-litre 130bhp petrol, 1.6-litre 201bhp petrol and the 1.6-litre 134bhp diesel. There is also a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. 0 to 60mph times range from 7.5 to 10.8 seconds, average fuel consumption from 40.9 to 58.8mpg and emissions from 127 to 156g/km.

New Kia Soul trim levels are the: 1, 2, 3 and Sport. Standard equipment includes: air-conditioning, powered exterior mirrors, roof rails, air-conditioning, remote central locking and the digital radio. The Soul's special skill is that it is available with 2-tone paint. Prices range from £13,995 - £23,250 on the road.

Kia Niro overview

The New Kia Niro is a “low emission hybrid crossover”, the manufacturer explained. It measures 4,355mm long, 1,805mm wide and the cargo capacity is 427-litres. Power comes courtesy of a 1.6-litre petrol engine – plus an electric motor – that are teamed to 6-speed automatic transmission and produce 139bhp (in combination).

This power plant propels it to 60mph in 11.1 seconds. Depending on the specification, it averages 64.2 or 74.3mpg and emits carbon at the rate of 88 or 101g/km. On this basis, this vehicle's special skill is that it is environmentally efficient which minimises expenditure at the petrol pump and the cost of vehicle excise duty.

Niro trims are 1, 2, 3 and First Edition. Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, all-round electric windows, cruise control with speed limiter, electronic stability control and hill-start assist to prevent it rolling backwards when starting on a slope. New Niro prices range from £21,295 to £26,995 (on the road).

Kia Sportage overview

The Kia Sportage is a “strikingly sporty” sports-utility vehicle and available with front or all-wheel-drive. It measures 4,480mm long, 1,855 wide, has a 503-litre cargo capacity (up to) and costs from £18,250 to £31,995 on the road. Engine options include the: 1.6-litre 130bhp petrol, 1.6-litre 174bhp petrol, 1.7-litre 114bhp diesel, 1.6-litre 134bhp diesel plus the 2.0-litre, 182bhp, diesel.

The Sportage – which is available with 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and 7-speed automatic transmission - hits 60mph in between 8.8 and 11.1 seconds. Expect between 37.2 and 61.4mpg and emissions from 119 to 177g/km. A special skill is that it automatically steers into parallel and perpendicular parking bays whilst a driver continues to work the throttle, gearbox and brakes.

Sportage trims are 1, 2, KX-2, 3, KX-3, 4, KX-4, KX-5, GT-Line and GT-Line S. Standard equipment includes the: colour reversing camera, rear parking sensors, height-adjustable driver's seat, air-conditioning, remote central locking, ignition key illumination plus Bluetooth. Prices range from £18,250 to £31,995 (on the road).

Kia Sorento overview

The Kia Sorento is the “intelligent” all-terrain vehicle, its manufacturer argued. A special skill is that in manual form it pulls up to 2.5 tonnes. This large, prestigious, workhorse is 4,780mm long, 1,890mm wide, has standard all-wheel-drive, 7 seats plus a 605-litre boot once the third row of seats is folded into the floor. The Sorento costs from £28,795 to £40,950 (on the road).

Power comes courtesy of a 2.2-litre, 197bhp, diesel engine that is teamed with 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The 0 to 60mph is 9.0 or 9.6 seconds, fuel consumption varies from 42.2 to 49.6mpg and carbon emissions vary from 149 to 177g/km. Trims are: KX-1, KX-2, KX-3 and KX-4 and standard equipment includes self-levelling suspension, reversing sensors plus front fog lights.
