Be warned! It might take a while to learn to love the new Mazda CX-5. This will be the first production vehicle to be built around the 'KODO Soul of Motion' design theme. Therefore, this compact sports-utility-vehicle – according to the Japanese motoring giant – will have: 'prominent new frontal treatment' and more 'dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility'. The less favourable interpretation might be 'bug-eyed little run- around'.The Head of Mazda's Design Division, Ikuo Maeda, said of the KODO design theme: 'In our work to further evolve the expression of motion, Mazda Design has focused on the strength, beauty and tension found in the instantaneous movement seen in animals. This motion that is so full of vitality that it stirs the emotions of those who see it.' Oh, okay then. The Mazda CX-5 will have a new chassis, body, engines, and transmissions. Furthermore, its engineers are working hard to ensure their distinctively styled machine has excellent environmental credentials for the class. As such, the least polluting version should have carbon emissions of roughly 120g/km. This highly efficient model will be powered by a 2.2- litre diesel engine. This will complement a less-efficient 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit. Love it or hate it, the new Mazda CX-5 can be seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13th. Take a tissue though, its vitality stirs the emotions of those who see it.
