Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has just received his new Chevrolet Volt and he says “it’s the car of the future; I think the Volt is absolutely phenomenal. A friend of mine drove one in the States and kept going on and on about it, so when I had the opportunity I said ‘yeah I’m going to try it because it’s the car of the future, really’. I’m very pleased with it.”Chevrolet signed a £25 million deal with Manchester United back in July so Sir Alex has taken possession of the electric Volt as part of the agreement. The Chevrolet Volt is the first car in the world to feature E-REV technology and has already picked up several awards, including North American Car of the Year, Green Car of the Year, and Motor Trend Car of the Year 2011 and 2011 World Green Car. It was also named the ‘Best Eco Car’ by the UK publication Diesel Car. The Volt can drive up to 50 miles using a full charge of electricity stored in its 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt's battery runs low, a petrol-powered generator operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles on a full tank. This range means greener motoring is much more widely accessible. The car features some generous specification including heated leather seats, Bluetooth with voice recognition and embedded phone, electronic keyless ignition with touch button start, 17-inch alloy wheels, ambient LED-based interior lighting, solar absorbing glass, DAB Digital Radio and an energy-efficient six-speaker stereo system that uses minimal electricity to operate. Other highlights include a 7-inch LCD screen with Driver Information Centre, touch-sensitive controls on the centre console, a pedestrian alert system, rear camera and front and rear park assist and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Sir Alex isn’t the only one who will receive a Chevrolet, a number of players and other staff will also receive Chevrolets as part of the partnership agreement between the club and General Motors. Former World Champion and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has picked up a seven-seater Chevrolet Captiva. Sir Bobby said “well, every new car gives you that little bit of excitement; this is really, really exciting. I’m going to enjoy driving it through all the winding roads and the little bridges near where I live and because I’ve got a 4 wheel drive, I can see everything over the top. It looks lovely. It’s first class and I am very happy with it.” The Chevrolet Volt starts at approximately £29,995 after the government’s Low Carbon vehicle grant of £5,000 is subtracted from the £34,995 list price and the Chevrolet Captiva is priced from £21,995.
