As most of us use price comparison sites for our utilities and insurance shopping, chances are you are already registered with them, and indeed, it doesn't work if you are not. You have to have your mobile number registered with them for the service to operate, and to have already done a car insurance quote with them online. Once the tedium of filling out your initial form is done, it is really easy to get more quotes quickly using the text service. So if you are out shopping for a car, and need to know how much the insurance would be before you buy it, you can now get a pretty much indication via a quick text.
Having tried out the service on a range of cars, confused.com came back with a quote on each occasion within 60 seconds. Neat, simple and painless, except for the £1 plus your standard message service charge. But that's around the same price as a typical mobile phone 'app', so it isn't the end of the world. Better than paying too much for your car insurance, or buying a car and later finding out that it is too expensive to insure. As with all insurance policies and quotes, there will be a range of 'terms and conditions apply' caveats attached, so a quick review of them is necessary. All in all, a worthy attempt to shortcut the sometimes painful process of buying car insurance, and a useful tool for the busy car buyer.
