Oh my! Top Gear's Caterham Superlight R500 is back.
Oh my! Top Gear's Caterham Superlight R500 is back. This mighty machine was once thrashed around the Dunsfold Circuit by their Tamed Racing Driver. It recorded a blistering time of 1:17.9 placing it just short of the lead – but ahead of machinery that cost ten-times its price. No surprise the motoring show named it Car of the Year in 2008. After its appearance on the test track that particular R500 kept itself busy as the manufacturer’s press car. Lending powerful cars to led-footed motoring journalists? Is that really wise? This vehicle has now retired from its media role but has big plans for the future. But what? When people retire they often decorate their houses, enjoy weekends in mainland Europe, and have a strong desire to take-up gardening. Life is therefore pleasant as they pass the time between visits from their grandchildren. Sounds fine, but this relaxed lifestyle would not suit the feisty Caterham Superlight R500. As such, this 500bhp per- tonne rocket will perform for Top Gear Live in 2011. See this beast at Birmingham's NEC between November 11th and 13th, then at the London ExCeL from November 24th to 27th. Caterham Cars’ Andy Noble commented: “We always said that we’d need a damn good reason to bring the Top Gear R500 out of retirement, so when we got the call we couldn’t resist the temptation to unleash it on the public once more on this unique indoor track.” What a way to spend your dotage. When I retire, I want to be a Caterham Superlight R500.
