Top Ten of 100 Fuel Saving Cars

A fuel efficient car could save you more money than you think.

A fuel efficient car could save you more money than you think. So take a look at our guide on which cars really are fuel efficient - let us consider the top ten best performers in the UK.. Conclusions are based on the current average cost of fuel per-thousand miles, focusing on traditionally fuelled and hybrid vehicles only. Fully electric cars feature separately.

Right, here we go. Counting down from ten ...The Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi Style ECOnetic 3dr hatch averages 85.6 mpg at a cost of 7.75 pence per mile. Making their presence felt in our countdown by finishing ninth is the Smart fortwo Cabrio Pulse mhd 2dr Softouch, also giving us 85.6 mpg at a cost of 7.75 pence per mile. Although not everyone’s cup of tea, these neat cars are very easy to park and great for running around the City. With identical costs to the Fiesta and the Smart is the Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi [95] ecoFLEX S 3dr [Start Stop] in eighth place. Now available are the Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi 1 EcoDynamics 5dr and the Hyundai i20 1.1 CRDi Blue 5dr these are both economical runarounds coming in at seventh and sixth place, these will cost you 7.51 pence per mile and manage 88.3 mpg. Finishing fifth is the Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 90 ECO Expression+ 5dr also managing 88.3 mpg with a cost of 7.52 pence per mile. Next in fourth is the Toyota Prius 1.8 VVTi Plug-in 5dr CVT Auto gaining you 134 mpg and 4.73 pence per mile.

That brings us to the Volvo V60 D6 AWD Plug-in Hybrid Pure Limited 5dr Auto in third giving an impressive 155 mpg at a cost of 4.28 pence per mile. This promises a full-sized family car with incredible economy figures. If this proves true in real-life conditions, then Volvo will have a real winner on their hands. The Vauxhall Ampera Positiv 5dr Auto and the Chevrolet Volt 5dr Auto, which come second and first respectively. Whereas these are predominantly powered by electricity they have small traditional engines too. Running costs are therefore 235.4 mpg which equates to only 2.69 pence per mile. Which one will you choose? Our first choice would be the Volvo, but we’re expecting long waiting lists!

* We have selected the highest MPG model from each range. Each model can only appear once in the list. There may be multiple versions of each make and model that do more miles per gallon than cars higher up in the list, this is a representative sample. You can view the MPG of each individual model in our research section.

I can't believe the technology - in this day and age - is not there to provide a far more fuel efficient, realistic car at an affordable cost. Why the Volvo - i'd go for the Audi A4, save £20k on purhase, and pay the extra £600 per year for the extra fuel.

Why the Volvo? I really don't understand why car companies put such an extortionate price for reduction in fuel usage. That cost £44k before extras. 3 Ford Fiestas please!!

Nissan Leaf?
