Ford Fiesta remains best-selling model in 2014
UK car registrations surged 9.3 per cent to hit a 10-year high of 2,476,435 in 2014, the fourth biggest figure for new car sales of all time.
The figure was well ahead of the EU average of 5.7%.
The hike was helped by growing interest in plug in vehicles, with sales up from 3,586 in 2013 to 14,498 in 2014.
Although the increase in plug in cars was significant, alternative fuel vehicles still only accounted for 2.1% of car sales in 2014.
The list of the top 10 bestselling cars of 2014 is as follows:
10. Nissan Juke – 39,263 sales
The Juke had some changes made for 2014 and it seems to have been highly beneficial for sales of the car. It will be interesting to see if it can keep the sales up in 2015.
9. Fiat 500 – 44,005 sales
There are many different personalisation options for the Fiat 500 and it is a perfect little car for driving around busy cities. Not quite so useful if you have a family though.
8. Audi A3 – 45,581 sales
Audi is the only premium brand which managed to bag a place in the top 10.
7. Volkswagen Polo – 48,004 sales
This car has universal appeal among people of all ages, from those getting their first car to pensioners who have been driving for decades, so it’s no surprise to see it in the top 10.
6. Nissan Qashqai – 49,909 sales
This is the best-selling crossover car of 2014. The car has had a facelift and now looks a lot more stylish.
5. Vauxhall Astra – 59,689 sales
The Astra is a car very popular with families due to its fairly large boot and roomy interior. A new model is being released later this year but will that be enough to push it higher up next year’s poll?
4. Volkswagen Golf – 73,880 sales
The Golf is now into its seventh generation and has appeared on the best-selling cars poll every year since it was launched. Another very popular car with families.
3. Vauxhall Corsa – 81,140 sales
Often one of the first cars many people consider as their first car due to it being one of the cheapest models to insure, even for young drivers, so it’s no surprise that the Corsa has made the top three.
2. Ford Focus – 85,140 sales
The Focus is getting an update in 2015, although that will unlikely be enough for it to claim the top spot next year after being so far behind fellow Ford car, the Fiesta.
1. Ford Fiesta – 131,254 sales
The Ford Fiesta is now Britain’s best-selling car of all time, taking over from the Ford Escort. Having sold over 46,000 models more than the Focus, it’s hard to see the Ford Fiesta losing this crown any time soon.
