A study on the second-hand market establishes which vehicles sell fastest, by sector.
Used car market strong in United Kingdom
The UK's fastest selling used cars have been revealed by CAP HPI. The company split vehicles into sectors such as city, supermini and large executive. Models from a range of sectors sell within 2 days on average which – they concluded – proves motorists have a strong appetite for used stock.
The Fiat 500 Hatchback is the fastest selling, second-hand, city sector vehicle within the United Kingdom. This 3-door hatchback earns plaudits for its retro styling that is inspired by its namesake which launched in the 1950s. It also has a fashionable image and memorable interior to elevate it beyond some competitors.
The Ford Fiesta wins the supermini class. This hatchback is available with 3 or 5 doors and – particularly in its current form – is considered one of the best handling cars in its class. The range also incorporates a high performance trim; specifically the ST which has 182PS, 240Nm of torque, and hits 62mph in 6.9 seconds.
The BMW 3 Series Convertible claims top spot in the convertible sector. As with the brand's other cars, it benefits from a prestigious badge that earns plaudits amongst motorists. Newer versions have ingenious features such as head-up display that projects key information such as current speed onto the windscreen.
Large executive sector
The Jaguar XJ Diesel is the fastest selling, second-hand, large executive vehicle. This saloon is one of those “I have made it cars” and its prestige is only bettered by a handful of models. The current version has a supreme ride, elegant styling, comfortable cabin and averages 49.5mpg which is remarkable for a car this size.
The Audi TT Coupé takes the sports sector win. As is typical of the brand, it feels robustly built which – for a second-hand buyer in particular – inspires confidence. Its status is further boosted by the fashionable badge, sharp styling, engaging handling and an association with its supercar sibling; the Audi R8 Coupé 5.2-litre.
The Lamborghini Murcielago Coupé takes honours in the supercar sector where prestige and extreme performance come standard. The most potent version has a 6.5-litre, 670hp, petrol engine. This supercar further stands out thanks to its gull-wing doors which open up, rather than out, so are reminiscent of the DeLorean DMC-12.
Other fast selling used vehicles include the: Peugeot 207 Coupé Cabriolet (coupé cabriolet sector), Vauxhall Ampera (electric), Audi A5 Coupé/Diesel Coupé (executive), Mitsubishi Carisma (lower medium), Bentley Continental GT (luxury executive), Mercedes Viano Diesel (multi-purpose vehicle), Volkswagen Tiguan (sports-utility vehicle) and the BMW 3 Series Coupé (upper medium).
