Video: Nissan Note Goes Zorbing

Small family car rolled down hill to highlight new safety system

A Nissan Note has been shoehorned inside the world's largest working Zorb and rolled down hill at a military testing facility – and the stunt has been captured on video.

A Zorb is a large, transparent, inflatable plastic ball. Most are designed for two people who climb inside then scream their way to the bottom.

The Nissan “CarZorb” is larger than its counterparts as it has a 6-metre diameter, 18 metre circumference and weighs more than 1 tonne. It took more than two months to construct.

The video starts with engineers inflating the Zorb. The weather is cold and damp, and a wrecked tank sits nearby. Later, the car is shown in its launch position. Workers then pull and push until the Zorb rolls freely. They celebrate their success by clapping and hugging.

Nissan Note Safety Shield Technology

The purpose of the stunt was to highlight the car's Safety Shield Package. This – the manufacture suggests – is represented by the CarZorb's protective plastic bubble.

Safety Shield incorporates three safety systems:
  • Blind Spot Warning uses a camera to scan for vehicles concealed from the motorist's view. Once a hazard is detected, a light illuminates in the relevant wing mirror. If the motorist signals a lane change, the light flashes and is accompanied by an audible tone. Blind Spot Warning operates once the Note hits 20mph.
  • Lane Departure Warning, in contrast, works from 45mph. Its purpose is to recognise when the vehicle is drifting. It then – unless the motorist is signalling a lane change – initiates a visual and audible warning to encourage a correction. The system can detect faint road markings, and adjust sensitivity on rural roads to account for the necessary driving style.
  • Finally, Moving Object Detection alerts the motorist when someone, or something, is moving close the vehicle while it is reversing. This might be a child, animal or vehicle.
Carefully engineered

Bastien Schupp, Vice President for Strategy & Marketing at Nissan, said: “The Nissan Note has been carefully engineered to provide motorists with a whole range of technology that creates a protective bubble around you and your car. Our Safety Shield technology in particular is unrivalled amongst other small family cars.

“Creating a life-size CarZorb to highlight the technology is an exciting and memorable way of reminding people about the benefits of Nissan’s Safety Shield.”
