Buying a personalised registration number can be quite a complex matter, as the DVLA have over 30 million registrations available to buy online. So finding your ideal number plate might seem daunting at first, but the process really is quite simple. To begin your search using the DVLA personalised registrations simply enter some initials, your name, or anything else that you would like to have on your number plate, in the yellow search box on the site. The results will then give you a small selection of the choices available to you whihc you can expand or amend as you see fit.
Just remember you can make your vehicle look as old as you wish but you cannot make it look newer than it actually is. For example you cannot put a Y registration number on a T registered vehicle but you could choose any prefix range from an A to a T.
As well as buying a ‘new’ unissued registration number direct from DVLA Personalised Registrations, you can also buy from a registration number dealer or from a motorist in a private sale.
Private dealers sell unissued registration numbers from DVLA Personalised Registrations, and they also act as an agent for motorists who want to sell their registration number. If you purchase a ‘new’ unissued registration number you will receive a certificate of entitlement known as a V750. If you buy a previously issued registration number you will receive a retention document naming you as the ‘nominee’.
You can buy from a motorist who wants to sell a personalised registration that is on their vehicle, you will need to provide the seller with your registration certificate and MOT certificate if it requires one. If the personalised registration is held on a certificate of entitlement or retention document your name will be added as the ‘nominee’ and then you need to assign the personalised registration to the vehicle yourself.
Once you have purchased your number and have all the relative paperwork you will need to go to a registered number plate supplier, the registered supplier will need proof of your identity, as well as proof that the registration number belongs to you.
With the new 62 plate coming up soon, have fun finding your perfect registration number.
