A one-off Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra has been created in tribute to Carroll Shelby, who died in May 2012. Shelby was a racing driving, successful entrepreneur, high profile philanthropist, and legendary automotive designer. As such, he worked for Ford during most of his sixty year career. During this time he helped create Cobras, the GT40, and numerous Mustangs. Even at the age of eighty-eight Shelby was involved with top-end automotive engineering. He, therefore, spent hours testing the most powerful production Ford Mustang of all time. No doubt his experience provided a unique and valuable insight.

That brings us back to the one-off Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra. This is based on a 662bhp model, but has a 4.0-litre supercharged engine that produces a mighty 850bhp. That is comparable to a modern Formula One car. This power is sent to twenty-inch rear wheels, that are also thirteen-inches wide. The front wheels measure twenty-inches by ten. These complement a special bonnet and wide rear body kit. All this is wrapped-up in the Guardsman Blue paint and Wimbledon White stripes that graced Cobras of the sixties. This mighty machine will now tour America and - Ford say - will then be 'used in a special way' that Shelby would have appreciated. As he was a philanthropist, perhaps the car will be sold to raise cash for charity. I reckon every Cobra fan in the world would love to own it.
