British Grand Prix at Donnington Park from 2010

Silverstone has lost the rights to host the British Grand Prix from 2010.

The future of the British Grand Prix has been made secure although the race will be moved from the famous Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire which has hosted the British Grand Prix since 1987.

The 2009 race will be the last to be held at Silverstone with the decision to move the race being based on the fact that that the Silverstone circuit and the British Racing Drivers Club were unable to meet the costs of upgrading the circuit to the required standard.

The race will from 2010 be held at the Leicestershire circuit of Donnington Park which currently hosts the British Moto GP event. An estimated £100 Million is set to be spent on the Donnington circuit to upgrade the venue to meet F1 standards, Donnington Park officials have stated that this required cash will be generated by a debenture scheme, or long-term bond. Many observers had original speculated that Bernie Ecclestone was going to bankroll the upgrade.
