Qualifying took place at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal in tricky conditions. Q1 saw drivers struggling to stay on track as wet weather appeared at the start.

Mark Webber in his Red Bull seemed to have mastered the conditions with a 1:23.247, but with a few minutes remaining, Fernando Alonso bettered that time by 0.023 seconds. Romain Grosjean in his Lotus struggled to get out of the drop zone while Paul Di Resta was out again for the second consecutive race weekend.

Out in Q1: Paul Di Resta, Charles Pic, Romain Grosjean, Jules Bianchi, Max Chilton, Giedo Van Der Garde

As the rain continued in Q2 it was Lewis Hamilton setting the pace with a 1:29.259, but then both Webber and Sebastian Vettel knocked a second off that time. With a couple of minutes to go the session was red flagged, as Felipe Massa crashed his Ferrari after touching the very wet white line and hitting the barrier. With Q2 resuming it was a race to set a time and get out of the drop zone for Jenson Button and Adrian Sutil. Button failed to cross the line to get another lap and qualified 12th.

Q2 losers were: Nico Hulkenberg, Sergio Perez, Pastor Maldonado, Jenson Button, Esteban Guterriez, Felipe Massa

As the track started to dry in Q3 it was Vettel that dominated the session. A surprise in the final part of qualifying was Valtteri Bottas, the first time he’d made it to Q3. The Toro Rosso team had two cars in the top 10 with Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo.
