Forecourt Update: Nissan Pulsar

Everything you need to know about the new Nissan hatchback

What Is It?

The Nissan Pulsar is a small family class hatchback that rivals the Ford Focus and VW Golf. According to Nissan, it was  “designed and engineered for Europe” and has the best “rear leg space” in its sector. Cargo capacity is class competitive, at 360-litres. The styling is generally restrained but has distinctive elements, including its rear lights. 

What Are The Engine Options?

Engines include the 1.2-litre, 115PS, petrol that propels it to 62mph in 10.7 seconds. It is teamed with 6-speed manual transmission, averages 56.5mpg, and has emissions of 117g/km. These figures suffer slightly when it is connected to automatic transmission.

The 1.5-litre 110PS diesel, in contrast, averages 78.5mpg, emits carbon at the rate of 94g/km and hits 62mph in 11.5 seconds. The transmission is 6-speed manual only.

Both the petrol and diesel engine save fuel by switching off while the vehicle is stationary, perhaps at a red traffic light. They restart when the driver presses the clutch.

A 1.6-litre, 190PS, turbocharged petrol engine will join the range early in 2015.

What Are The Trim Options?

New Nissan Pulsar trims include the:  Visia, Acenta, N-Tec and Tekna.

The Visia has air-conditioning, six air bags, a tyre pressure monitoring system and Bluetooth. The Acenta adds dual-zone climate control, alloy wheels, automatic headlights, automatic windscreen wipers and a leather steering wheel and gear knob.

The N-Tec has privacy glass and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.  It also has a colour reversing camera . Finally, the top of the range Tekna benefits from the around view monitor that incorporates a camera on each side of the vehicle. These – courtesy of a screen on the dashboard – provide an aerial view of the vehicle to make parking easier.

Anything Else I Need To Know?

The Pulsar represents Nissan’s return to the traditional, small family car class. Since stopping production of the Almera, Nissan has used crossover cars such as the Qashqai as its offering in the sector.

How Much Is It?

The Nissan Pulsar Visia costs £15,995 to £17,595, the Acenta  is priced from £17,645 to £19,245. The N-Tec costs £18,995 to £20,595 and the Tekna £20,345 to £21,945.

I have to agree with "ex Nissan Driver" that the Renault connection has seriously dented Nissan's previous excellent reliability reputation. I have driven Datsuns and Nissans for over 30 years and never had any real problems until my last Nissan, which was a P12 Primera diesel estate. It was a lovely car but, unlike its predecessors, things DID go wrong and they all seemed to be due to the inclusion of Renault parts. I now drive a Honda Accord Estate and think that Nissan's biggest mistake was pulling out of the large family Saloon/Estate sector of the market. They tried to say the Qashquai replaced the Primera, but if you travel to the USA, one of their most popular vehicles is the Nissan Altima which clearly looks like it am updated Primera. When are Nissan going to wake up and introduce this over here ???

How much of this car has been downgraded to Renault standards? Nissan built well-made, reliable cars until they became entangled with Renault. The Almera N15 was a great car but the Almera N16 was a much lesser car due to Renault’s influence.
