Lewis Hamilton took third, which was lucky considering he nearly didn’t make it out of Q1. Fernando Alonso, who was looking to get back on track with leading the Championship after his disastrous race in Japan last time out, was behind the McLaren.

Hamilton’s team-mate, Jenson Button had a qualifying session to forget, as he failed to make it into Q3.

Michael Schumacher took 10th, just behind his fellow German Nico Rosberg. The team were fined €10,000 for releasing Rosberg into the path of Hamilton in the pits, the Briton narrowly avoiding an accident.
