New Audi A3 Euro NCAP Rating

The all-new Audi A3 must be tougher than the Terminator.

The all-new Audi A3 must be tougher than the Terminator. Why? Because Euro NCAP - the independent body that accesses vehicle safety - has awarded this prestigious lifestyle statement their maximum five-star rating. Sarah Connor must be thrilled. Euro NCAP's classification breaks down to scores of 95% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupants, and 74% for pedestrians. The all-new Audi A3 also earned 86% for the safety assist category that accesses features such as its seatbelt-on reminder system. This hatchback was also particularly praised for the protection it offers front occupants' knees, pedestrians' legs, and children in child seats during frontal and side impacts. Not that this matters to the Terminator, of course, he can only be injured by industrial strength sarcasm.

The Audi A3 has other virtues to inspire futuristic robots. For starters, this three-door fashion statement feels tremendously secure on the road. It therefore corners beautifully with very little body roll. The steering occasionally feels uninspiring, though. Compensation comes in the form of refined engines. Highlights include the 1.8-litre 180PS petrol and the 2.0-litre 150PS diesel. Models with these hit 62mph in 7.2 and 8.6 seconds, respectively, and average 50.4 and 68.9mpg. Great stuff... but let us be honest. Most people purchase an Audi A3 because of its prestigious badge. Without that, why not choose the comparable Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf? So, however safe - however fast - and however economical - those circles on the front remain its key selling point. Just Ask the Terminator.
