New Car Registrations Hit Decade High In March 2014

March 2014 New Car Registrations

Good news. March 2014 new car registrations provided the industry with its most successful month for ten years, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has revealed. As such, 464,824 found homes which equated to a notable rise of 17.7% compared to the previous year. This figure was, in fact, the second highest since the trade switched to the twice yearly, newer-style, registration plate in 1999. The best selling car of the month was the Ford Fiesta of which 25,753 were registered. This was followed by the Ford Focus (16,860) and the Vauxhall Corsa (16,231). These three are also the best selling of the year-to-date. Furthermore, March 2014 was the most successful for alternatively-fuelled cars such as fully electric models. As such sales – compared to March 2013 – rose 63.8% to 8,713. However, petrol models far eclipsed this figure as 233,702 found homes. Diesel cars were only fractionally less popular, at 222,409.

SMMT Chief Executive Discusses March 2014 New Car Registrations

The SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes, explained that the figures represent “a surprisingly strong level of growth and a reflection of intensifying consumer confidence and the availability of great new products.” He added: "Given the past six years of subdued economic performance across the UK, there is still a substantial margin of pent-up demand that is contributing to a strong new and used car market. There has never been a better time to buy a new car thanks to attractive finance deals and advanced technologies that often make new cars cheaper to run. We expect the market to continue to perform positively for the rest of the year – albeit at a more modest rate."
