New Motor Code to Protect Consumers

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has partially approved the Motor Industry Service and Repair Code

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has partially approved the Motor Industry Service and Repair Code. The scheme sets standards for member garages to achieve and helps safeguard consumers.

Member garages provide breakdowns of labour and part costs within written estimates. They obtain permission before implementing additional work and avoid deposits. The code also provides a consumer compensation scheme and punishes members failing to follow procedures. Charles Wallace, OFT Head of Consumer Codes said,

“Consumers need to know that when they take their car to a garage they are going to be treated in an honest and reliable manner. By using a garage that has an approved code, customers can be assured that they will receive a much higher standard of protection than required by law.”

To achieve full OFT approval Motor Codes Ltd, who run the scheme, must monitor the membership and demonstrate the code is working. Garages who then achieve the required standard can display the OFT Approved Code Logo.
