With over £1 billion annually spent on towcars, consumers want to buy a great vehicle that works for their holiday when they are towing their mini home from home. It also has to work in everyday life, on the daily commute, weekly shop and school run, as well as making sense financially.

The Practical Caravan magazine, in association with The Camping and Caravanning Club and What Car have announced the winners of their annual tow car awards, each vehicle had a class leading combination of practicality, good towing dynamics (cars were tested for stability, hill starts, acceleration and braking) and excellent buying and owning credentials.

Volkswagen triumphed in the awards starting with the family hatchback, winner of this class is the Volkswagen Golf 2.0TDI 140 Match 5dr this has a maximum towing weight of 1500kg and a list price of £21,105. Boot size isn’t huge though, and interior space is adequate, so for a family car it is at best adequate. Used 2.0 TDi Golfs can be picked up for under £10,000 if you don’t want to stretch this far.

The Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0 TDI 170 Bluemotion Technology Sport is winner of its class this has a maximum towing weight of 1,800kg and a list price of £26,250. The Passat has great space inside for the family and a huge boot for all the extras you need to take with you.

For towing up to 2,200kg the winner in this class is the sport utility vehicle otherwise known as the Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI 140 4Motion SE with a maximum towing weight of 2,200kg and a list price of £25,670, with used examples from around £15k. Not all Tiguans are 4 wheel drives, so make sure you pick a 4motion version.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XS has won its class for the third consecutive year, it can tow a whopping 3,500kg and comes in at £45,150. With 7 seats and unflappable off-road performance the family won’t get stuck in the mud at a site in one of these and you could tow a small village! Discovery 3 models offer similar performance and used prices are starting to dip to sensible levels.

The overall towcar winner of the year is …… the Jaguar XF 2.2D Premium Luxury, commentating on the XF’s win, Nigel Donelly of Practical caravan said “when towing its stability is unshakeable and its performance during the testing process was exemplary” The XF is capable of towing up to 1,850kg and retails at £37,200 . Other XF models can be bought new for as little as £29,900 currently, and used prices start at as little as £15,000 which is tremendous value for a car that not only is a towing champion, but regularly picks up the Top Executive Car gongs too.
