Toyota recalls hit the UK
Toyota UK have now recalled 220,000 cars following an accelerator problem
In a statement, the company said the precise number of European vehicles involved was still under investigation, but may reach up to 1.8 million vehicles.
The eight models recalled are the Toyota AYGO, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, Avensis and RAV4 and cover manufacturing dates going back to February 2005. The recall does not affect Lexus models. Toyota said it was not aware of any accidents resulting from the issue and that only a limited number of incidents involving accelerator pedals had been reported in Europe.
Toyota UK said: 'There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.' It added that 'a rough or chattered feeling may also be experienced when depressing/releasing the accelerator pedal,' but exactly which cars are affected is still under investigation, so owners will be contacted individually at a later date. Over one million UK drivers are now waiting to hear. The parts in question have, however, already been replaced on the European production line, so factory output will continue.
