Travel times and routes to avoid this Easter weekend

Experts are sounding the alarm for Easter weekend chaos on the roads, warning that the upcoming holiday might not be so good for travellers. With over 14 million leisure trips expected across the UK during Easter, experts predict a "carmageddon" scenario.

New estimates from the RAC and traffic analysts suggest that the convergence of Spring half term and Easter could lead to a significant surge in car journeys, with over 2.6 million expected on Friday alone.

According to RAC spokesperson Alice Simpson, “With Easter falling earlier than usual at the start of the school holidays, it could be ‘carmageddon’ for holidaymakers. Anyone who can delay leaving on Thursday 28 March until much later in the evening or set off as early as possible on Good Friday is likely to have a better journey than those who travel during the peak periods of the day.”

What times should I avoid travelling this Easter bank holiday weekend?

According to transport analytics specialists at INRIX, Thursday is expected to see peak traffic congestion from 2 pm to 7 pm, as the start of school half term coincides with regular commuting trips.

On Good Friday and over the weekend, the busiest times to avoid are typically midday, from 10 am and 3 pm. Therefore, drivers are encouraged to commence their journeys in the early morning or postpone them until later in the afternoon.

What roads should I avoid this Easter bank holiday weekend?

On Thursday, the M25 in both directions, spanning from the M23 near Gatwick to the M1 in Hertfordshire, is anticipated to be the most congested route from 4 pm, with travel times exceeding two hours—more than twice the usual duration.

Additionally, over the weekend, holidaymakers can expect significant delays on two popular routes: the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton and the M3 between the M25 and the south coast. Travel times on these routes are projected to stretch to one hour and 48 minutes and two hours and 18 minutes, respectively—twice the average journey time.

When is the best time to travel this Easter bank holiday weekend?

For those planning Easter travel, it's recommended to drive during off-peak hours, such as early mornings or evenings. The RAC suggests hitting the road after 7 pm on Thursday or after 5 pm from Friday to Sunday. On Easter Monday, leaving as late as 8 pm is advised, especially with many returning home for work the next day.
